Workshop topics included the following:

  • Defining Excellence
  • HBCU Excellence
  • SHIFT: Transitioning from High School to College
  • Purposeful Preparation
  • I'm Here Now What?

About Through the Gates

Our History

Through the Gates was created as an online program during the summer of 2022 to assist admitted first-year students in their transition from high school to college. It is also open to incoming transfer students and Pauline E. Drake Scholars.

The summer 2023 in-person Through the Gates program was made possible by the President's Innovative Fund and JPMorgan Chase. The program provided an innovative way to bring the Spelman experience to 140 incoming students, as well as an opportunity to learn college readiness skills and cultivate a sense of belonging for students. Workshop topics included Defining Excellence, HBCU Excellence, SHIFT: Transitioning from High School to College, Purposeful Preparation, and I'm Here Now What.

The Student Success Program is grateful for the support from alumnae and current students who made the events possible.  Alumnae and chapters of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College in Houston, Baltimore and Chicago assisted with securing space, food and decor. Current students residing in the cities served as program volunteers. The Chicago event was sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.
