Welcome

College is an exciting time of personal, intellectual and social growth. As Spelman College helps cultivate and support students who accept the charge to change the world, we also want to foster emotional and psychological growth that further allows our students to succeed and flourish - that is where the Counseling Center can be helpful. Our licensed mental health professionals are grounded in womanist perspectives that aim to support and empower the interconnecting and complex experiences of the whole person and how intersectionality impacts the lived experiences of women of African descent. We strive to help students manage their emotional well-being when the stress and demands of life and school affect their path towards success.

Mission

Counseling supports the mission of the Student Affairs Division and the philosophy of the College. In this regard, the center is committed to the holistic development of the student. This development includes academic, psychological, emotional, spiritual and cultural factors. Students receive individual counseling and psycho-educational programming to facilitate their personal growth in a learning environment of safety and confidentiality. Students are encouraged to explore issues which affect their sense of self and aid in enhancing appropriate decision-making. All efforts are made to identify and support the strengths of students and to assist them with living balanced lives. In addition, all staff members are committed to providing leadership and professional training to campus staff and faculty who are interested in the psycho-social development of students within the realm of higher education.

Vision

  • To provide counseling services grounded in cultural knowledge and sensitivity, which embrace the multiple identities of students, specifically the experiences of women of African descent.

  • To empower students through the exploration and assessment of their personal strengths.

  • To assist students in the development of healthy and sustainable coping skills in support of their emotional, social and academic growth, as well as, retention and graduation.
