A Unique Spelman College Experience

Spelman College Sisters ChapelWelcome to Sisters Chapel, the religious and spiritual center of Spelman College. Dedicated in 1927, Sisters Chapel has become a transformative space for Atlanta University Center students who seek to integrate the mind and the spirit as they aspire to become active and responsible global citizens.

Sisters Chapel embodies a historical and contemporary spirituality of resistance and resilience that encourages women across the world to stand in solidarity with each other on behalf of equality and justice. With a ministry that lies in the intersection of justice and the liberating power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Sisters Chapel is an interfaith, affirming, and extravagantly welcoming space to anyone in earnest search for spiritual rooting.

Sunday Worship Services

Join us every Sunday during the academic school year for our weekly Sunday worship service at 1 p.m. in Sisters Chapel.

Supporting a Rich Legacy of Faith

Rooted in Womanist theory and praxis, Sisters Chapel holds true to a tradition of bringing to the forefront issues of importance to women of African descent. In fulfillment of the Spelman mission, for almost a century, the Chapel has hosted renowned national and world leaders who have helped to nurture generations of Spelman women for leadership and service. The Chapel has also been a sacred space for music, healing, inspiration, and reflection, serving as a memorial site in 1968, where the body of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lay in state for 48 hours.

In 2006, under the leadership of former Dean Lisa D. Rhodes, Sisters Chapel hosted the historic "Sisters of African Descent: Connecting Spirituality, Religion, and Vocation Global Conference." In February 2013, the Chapel published its first anthology, funded by the Lilly Endowment, titled "If I Do What Spirit Says Do: Black Women, Vocation, and Community Survival."

Using the Past to Ascend to New Heights

The Rev. Neichelle R. Guidry, Ph.D., a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, Yale Divinity School and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, was appointed the dean of Sisters Chapel in 2018. Rev. Guidry was listed as one of the “12 New Faces of Black Leadership” in TIME Magazine (January 2015). She has also been recognized for “quickly becoming one of her generation’s most powerful female faith leaders” on Ebony Magazine’s 2015 Power 100 list (December 2015) and one of “Ten Women of Faith Leading the Charge Ahead” by Sojourners.

Join us for Sunday Worship Service

Together, we will grow spiritually.

For the Soul of Spelman College

We welcome you to join us for worship and participate in our ministries and programming. As the center for human flourishing and ethical leadership development, the Dean of the Chapel, with the support of Student Chapel Assistants and Art Ministry Leaders, offers a weekly Sunday worship service held at 1 p.m. in Sisters Chapel. Chapel services are open to all.

Worship services are supported by our wide range of student-led ministries, including Manifest Praise Team, Anointed Vessels Mime Ministry, Ashietu African Dance Ministry, and others. Weekly sermons encourage students to grow spiritually and to think critically about personal identity formation, international affairs, social change, ethical leadership, civility, young adulthood and faith. In addition, student leaders provide words of encouragement and wisdom during our student expressions worship services.
