The Student Success Program (SSP) welcomes you to your first semester at Spelman College

The Student Success Program piloted First Year Study Groups during the 2020-2021 school year to enrich the learning environment and foster community engagement through peer-led interactions. Each small group consists of approximately 15 first-year students, led by an upper-level student. In the weekly sessions, students review course material, discuss various student success-related topics critical to first-year success, and conduct team-building exercises. The groups meet three times each week. This year students will be grouped by their FYE course. For the last two years, it has been proven that students who attend study sessions have a higher GPA than those students who study sessions.

The formation of student success study groups is one of the actions being taken to ensure your community engagement and virtual learning experience will be as enriching as possible. As a new student, you will be assigned to a student success study group for your first term.

Student success study groups are designed to support student matriculation in small, specially trained peer-led clusters of no more than 15 students. You and your study group members will be expected to actively engage in peer tutoring, login for virtual or in-person study hall and respond to requests for advising with faculty and SSP team members several times this term.

Please know that we will do our best to provide an engaging learning environment that not only supports your academic success but provides ample opportunities for you to partner and participate with your peers every step of the way. Therefore, you can expect an array of fun, interactive SSP activities that support your academic success of through these study groups.

The SSP Program sincerely looks forward to providing a platform for your success as a first year student, where you feel comfortable asking questions, learning new things and succeeding in partnership with other Spelmanites.

If you have any questions about study groups, please contact Brandi Reese at brandi.reese@spelman.edu.

Sophomore Major Meet Up

In order to provide sophomore-level students with additional academic support tailored to their major, the Student Success Program will offer Major Meet-Ups. Each week “guides” (upper level students in major) will be available to meet for with sophomore level students of same or similar majors. During these meet-ups, guides will be able to provide course assistance in courses related to major and mentorship.
