Securing Your Room Assignment

The process of securing your on-campus room assignment varies based upon your student classification and student type. The process for any student will begin on the Spelman Housing Dashboard.

All students interested in living on campus for a full academic year will complete a Spelman housing application and sign the Spelman College Housing Lease.

Current students will complete a housing application and lease to express their interest in living on campus for the subsequent academic year. Once the application period closes, all applications will be randomly sorted to determine if a student may participate in the housing selection process.

New Students

The housing application for students who will be new at the start of a fall semester is available on April 1. Only those individuals who have been accepted to Spelman will be able to complete a housing application.

New First-Year, First-Time Students

New first-year, first-time students who are under 19-years old are required to live on campus at Spelman. Once you have a completed housing application and have accepted your admission to attend Spelman, you will be notified that you may select your room for the upcoming academic year. You will be able to make your initial room selection and re-enter the site if you want to make a change to your room.

Important Dates for New First-Year, First-Time (NFT) Students

Transfer and Guest Students Spelman is not able to guarantee housing to transfer and guest students. You can compete a housing application which will be viewed as a waitlist form. Students who are under 20 years old with fewer than four semesters of enrollment at any college/university will be our priority to house. We encourage you to explore living options in the local community in case we are not able to extend an on-campus assignment to you.

Residency Requirement: First-Year Students

Spelman College believes that the development of its sisterhood is entrenched in its history and traditions, academic excellence, and strong co-curricular program. To ensure that all Spelman College students receive a strong foundation and develop as Spelman women, all traditional first-year, first-time students are required to live on campus. There may be compelling circumstances that would warrant exception and release from the residency requirement. The residency exemption request process is intended to provide an avenue for those students who meet basic criteria for exemption.

Submitting a residency exemption request does not guarantee a release from your housing lease. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please do not make other living arrangements until you have been notified of the outcome of your request. Requests for exemption must be initiated by the student online through the Housing Dashboard. Parents or other involved parties may not initiate the request. Students must first complete the required housing application to access the request form.

Some request categories are only considered PRIOR to the start of an academic year as indicated below.

  • Age – prior to academic year only; deadline August 1

Commuter Student Resources

Here at Spelman, we are unable to house all students and some prefer off-campus living. Many juniors, seniors and nontraditional students live off campus and commute anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes from campus. To help you balance academic, personal, work, social and community engagement responsibilities, we have special accommodations for you. There are many off-campus housing resources available to Spelman students. For further information, please visit Commuter Students.
