Diversity Matters at Spelman

Diversity is a large part of what makes Spelman a global leader in higher education. Spelman College welcomes women from all over the world, including the Bahamas, Ghana, South Africa, Japan, Trinidad, Tobago, Australia, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, South Korea and Vietnam. International students come to Spelman as full-time undergraduates and foreign exchange students.

Am I an International Student?

An international applicant is anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Any student attending high school abroad, regardless of citizenship, will also be classified as an international applicant. Students who require an F1 (Student) Visa must submit proper financial documentation before a Form I-20 can be issued. The financial statement is available by contacting the international student services coordinator. For questions or concerns, contact the international student services coordinator.

International Student Services

We understand that our students are far away from home and need some assistance with managing their visa, education and work requirements. The coordinator of International Student Services is the Spelman College Designated School Officer and serves as your liaison to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the U.S. Department of State.

Students are encouraged to visit the office to address questions about visas, immigration status, changes in USCIS regulations, and campus resources. Learn more about International Student Services at Spelman.

Admission for International Applicants

A complete application will include:

  • Completed application through the Common Application
  • Two teacher recommendations
  • Official high school and/or college transcript(s)
    • If documents are not in English, an official translation is needed
Official TOEFL score (only for students from non-English-speaking countries)
  • Non-refundable $40 application fee
  • Official SAT or ACT scores (optional for students graduating in 2025)

Financing

International applicants must also demonstrate the ability to fulfill the financial obligations associated with matriculation in their college program. The only form of aid available to our international students is our merit-based scholarships. Spelman College does not offer any financial aid to international students. The Office of Admissions awards a limited number of merit-based scholarships to new incoming first-year students. Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of students based on the academic profile and details she submitted in her application. The committee considers those who demonstrate strong academic performance and engagement in high school. This determination is based on the grade point average, standardized test scores (if submitted), community service and leadership.
