Shadowing Opportunities

Health CareersThe Women in Science and Health (WISH) Shadowing Program offers experiential clinical and research opportunities to Spelman students for professional preparation that contributes to a student’s career, personal, intellectual and ethical development with our partnered clinicians. Fieldwork assignments offer an opportunity to develop sustainable clinical and public health partnerships in which students receive hands-on training to develop professional skills, provide technical assistance, develop programs and conduct research to address community concerns.

The Health Careers Program has collaborated with health professionals from varied specialties and organizations such as dermatology, internal medicine, chiropractic care, public health, dentistry, physical therapy, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, etc. In these collaborative agreements, our partners agree to provide our students with extensive exposure in fields of healthcare which students gain proficiency in skill development effective communication, altruism, civic service, and emotional intelligence. Electing to participate in shadowing experiences, Spelman students are highly recognized for their diverse training in the application process for admissions to health professional institutions.

Preceptors from all specialties (public health, medicine, nursing, dentistry, physical and occupational therapy) will learn about program and academic offerings for our pre-health students and ways they can become more engaged as well as meet the program leadership and team. Students will develop their networking skills and learn of the partnerships available to them through the Practicum and Internship course for Health Science majors and the Health Careers Program.
