A Message From the Director

Greetings,

I am Steve Bowser, the Spelman College Director of Emergency Preparedness. I want to thank you for taking the time to briefly acquaint yourself with our Public Safety services and programs. The Public Safety program was established on August 1, 1989, and was charged with developing a comprehensive community safety and security program which would meet the unique needs of the Spelman community. Our approach to maintaining the safest environment for our campus is built on the belief that only through constantly nurturing and expanding positive relationships with both internal and external partners can we meet our evolving community safety and security needs.

From the onset, we committed ourselves to fully engaging the entire community by encouraging participation in the development of the department's programs and services. This has resulted in the evolution of strong partnerships with students, faculty, staff, and external community stakeholders. At Spelman, every member of our campus community is expected to fully support and participate in our safety and security initiatives. Our community members are fully committed to “Protecting Themselves and Each Other.”

The department's basic services include maintaining a 24-hour emergency communications center, conducting safety and security patrols of the campus and adjacent streets, and utilizing those members of our team who are state certified police officers to enforce state law on campus and within 500 yards. Additionally, in partnership with student organizations, faculty and external community partners, we offer an array of educational programs designed to promote personal and community safety and security.

For more detailed information regarding our services and programs, I encourage you to fully explore our website, and should you have questions, please feel free to contact me at 404-525-6401.
