Off-Campus Referrals


Although the counseling center offers both brief individual therapy and group therapy, there are situations in which a student’s treatment needs will be best met by mental health services in the community. Students whose needs require long-term support will generally be referred to community resources for ongoing treatment.

Similarly, students whose needs require a particular type of expertise that is not available in the Center are also referred to community resources.

Even in cases where a student’s ongoing needs require a referral to community resources, the Counseling Center can often assist the student in managing the presenting concerns and provide support until the student is able to connect to the appropriate community resources.
The Counseling Center may provide referral services through phone consultation, during the initial session, or as these factors become more apparent during the course of services.

Find the Right Clinician for You

ThrivingCampus is an online directory that allows Spelman students to access a list of off-campus, licensed mental health clinicians, many of whom specialize in working with students. The website includes various guides and resources that assist students through the process of securing off-campus outpatient care.

Consider This When Connecting With a Provider:

  • Do I have a provider preference for gender and cultural background (e.g., ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.)?

  • Do I want therapy, medication, or both therapy and medication?

  • Do I want to see a practitioner with certain expertise or who can provide a particular type of counseling approach?

  • How will I pay for treatment and how much can I afford for counseling?

  • How often do I want to be seen in counseling (e.g., once a week, once every other week, twice a week, etc.)?

Community Resources

Finding a Therapist in the Metro Atlanta Area

Visit Psychology Today, and select “Find a Therapist.” Then, type in Spelman’s zip code (30314). This search will provide a long list of local providers. You can narrow the list by selecting filters on the left-hand side of the page (including treatment specialties, types of insurance accepted, etc.). When you select a profile by clicking on a photo, you will find a statement written by the provider, as well as information about the provider’s education, cost and credentials.

Crisis Support

  • Georgia Crisis and Access Line (24/7 support): 864-271-8888.
  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (24/7 support provided nationwide): 800-273-8255.
  • Anyone can text with a trained counselor 24/7 at the Crisis Text Line by texting “HOME” to 741741.
  • The Steve Fund offers a specialized texting support service through the Crisis Text Line. Text “STEVE” to 741741.
  • For teens and young adults in crisis, The Jed Foundation offers a specialized texting support service through the Crisis Text Line. Text “START” to 741741.
  • For students with eating-related concerns in crisis, the National Eating Disorders Association offers a specialized texting support service through the Crisis Text Line. Text “NEDA” to 741741.
  • For LGBTQ students in crisis, the TREVOR Project offers a Lifeline (1-866-488-7386), a texting option (text “Start” to 678678), and a chat option. All options are available 24/7.
  • The National Eating Disorders Association offers a Helpline (800-931-2237), available Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. ET, and Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET.
  • For Veterans or people concerned about a one, Veteran’s Crisis Line offers 24/7 support by calling 1-800-273-8225 (option 1).
  • Military Hotline offers 24/7 free and confidential support to service members, veterans and their families: 1-888-457-4838 or text “MIL1” to 839863.
  • For anyone who needs support or access to resources and treatment for alcohol or drug use, contact the Alcohol & Drug Helpline 1-800-923-4357, or text “Recovery” to 839863.
  • If you are in an unhealthy or dangerous relationship, the National Domestic Violence Hotline can provide support by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
