In fall 2022, the Spelman College entrepreneurship and innovation minor was developed jointly with Morehouse College, with advice and guidance from the Black Economic Alliance. It launched in Spelman’s Department of Economics and Morehouse’s Division of Business Administration and Economics. The minor consists of 24 credit hours, 20 major core courses, and one elective from a variety of disciplines.
Powered by a two-year $10 million anchor grant from Bank of America and developed by the Black Economic Alliance Foundation, Spelman College, and Morehouse College, the Center for Black Entrepreneurship, is the first-ever academic center of its kind to produce, train, and support a new generation of Black entrepreneurial talent.
The mission of The Center for Black Entrepreneurship (CBE) is to create a well-equipped cohort of Black entrepreneurs with skills and talents to better navigate the gap between entrepreneurs and capital and commercial markets. Additionally, the CBE wants to instill entrepreneurial thinking in all students at Spelman College and Morehouse College and to create a community of business practitioners with a lifelong commitment to achieving social and economic progress through innovation.
“Today’s young entrepreneurs will play an important role in solving many of our society’s most critical issues, and we’re pleased to support Spelman in creating a place where students can come together to share and test ideas that will also create more opportunities for positive engagement and growth with the local Westside community,” said Arthur M. Blank, chairman, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. “I’m also personally proud to support the alma mater of Rosalind Brewer, Spelman Board Trustee and Blank Family Foundation Associate Board Member, who often champions her experience at Spelman and the impact that it’s had on her success.”
