Earn a Major in Spanish

A Spanish major is a combination of literary, linguistic and cultural coursework. This major will prepare students for professional careers in writing, inernational relations, interpretation, translation, business development management, journalism, social work, advertisement, customer support, education, hospitality, healthcare, and more.

Spanish Major

Requirements

  • Nine courses above the 202 level for 36 credits
  • Service Learning while abroad or at Spelman for 2 credits
  • Capstone Project/Thesis Portfolio for 2 credits

  • SPA 303 Conversation
  • SPA 306 Advanced Grammar and Composition
  • SPA 308 Intro to Literary and Cultural Studies

Major Required Courses (ALL REQUIRED)

  • SPA 351 Intellectual Traditions of Women
  • SPA 352 National and Traditional Identities
  • SPA 353 Linguistics, Professional, Cultural, and Artistic Expressions
  • SPA 354 Dynamic Relations of Political Power

Major Required Courses (CHOOSE 2)

  • SPA 451, 452, 453, 454

Other Required Credits

  • SPA 300 and 301 – Service Learning Abroad or at Spelman
    (1 credit each summer abroad or service learning associated with a course)
  • SPA 440 and 441 – Capstone
    (1 credit each semester of the Senior year)

Study Abroad

Spanish major students may complete the Service Learning while abroad or at Spelman requirement with summer or semester abroad programs:

  • First summer abroad: 303 or 306 (+1 credit for service learning)
  • Second summer abroad: 351 or 352 or 353 or 354 (+1 credit for service learning) (5 credits each Summer)
  • Semester abroad: 2 courses at 350 or 450 level
    (language courses 303, 306, 306 must be taken at Spelman)
    (8 Credits Total)

  • 354/454 | Dynamic Relations of Political Power: Imperialism, Dictatorships, (Neo)Colonialism, Democracies and Civic Society (Social Movements, NGOs)

  1. Gain familiarity with the literature, landscape, and culture of the Hispanic world
  2. Develop a natural fluency in both the written and spoken Spanish language
  3. To read, write, and translate in Spanish
