Sunday Worship Services

Sisters Chapel at Spelman College gives leadership to campus-wide religious and spiritual programs that seek to empower the whole person through nurturing spiritual development, promoting ethical leadership and supporting religiously diverse learning. Every Sunday, in collaboration with student organizations, the Office of the Dean of the Chapel sponsors a worship service in Sisters Chapel at 1 p.m.

Each year, nearly one hundred students develop leadership skills serving as chapel assistants and arts ministry leaders within the context of a weekly worship service for an average of approximately 200 students/friends of the College and alumnae. In addition, many campus-wide academic and spiritual empowerment programs are sponsored by Sisters Chapel including educational forums, panel discussions, international study tours and interfaith conversations related to women and issues of gender justice.

Student Development and Leadership Training

There are a number of opportunities for student involvement in Sisters Chapel leadership development programs. The Chapel Assistants Ministry is a leadership development program that provides opportunities for training in public speaking, personal etiquette, Bible, and contemporary issues of faith. The Arts Ministry leadership development program offers opportunities for student involvement in various artistic groups that bring to Black religious life and hip hop culture unique expressions of faith.

Palm Sunday in Sisters Chapel

Every Sunday is a great Sunday to join us for our worship service in Sisters Chapel. You will leave refreshed and blessed.

Praise Fest

Praise Fest is a dynamic two-night revival that offers spiritual empowerment to women both within the gates of Spelman College and throughout the broader Atlanta community. Renowned women clergy are invited to be guest preachers at this very high-spirited annual event.

Candlelight Service of Remembrance

The Candle Light Memorial service provides a space for parents, partners, children, family members, and friends of the Spelman community who have lost a beloved to come together and commemorate the life of their loved one through the lightening of a candle.

Through mime, liturgical and African dance, students use their creativity to put forth artistic and cultural expressions of struggle, endurance, faith, freedom, triumph and empowerment. The praise team and musicians inspire students through praise music, spirituals, anthems and hymns. The spoken word and drama ministries use their intellect and creative talents to give voice to issues that are culturally relevant to young adult life. An annual fall arts ministry concert attracts over 800 students from throughout the Atlanta University Center.

Arts Ministry leaders also participate in campus-wide events and community service projects that help students to explore ways they can live out their faith and contribute to positive social change. Community service projects have included the Mission Society on Skid Row in Los Angeles, several homeless shelters in Atlanta, Georgia and global humanitarian projects in Ghana and Senegal, West Africa.
