Information for High School Counselors

As a school counselor, you play an important role in helping your students find the best college for them. At Spelman, we want to provide your students with information about the College that will help them decide if Spelman is the perfect fit for them. We sure think so, and we look forward to answering any questions you may have about the quality educational experience Spelman has to offer.

Our Admissions Process

A completed application for new first-time applicants includes the following:
  • Completed Common Application
  • Essay (choose any of the essay prompts)
  • $40 online application fee or valid application fee waiver
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation*
  • One (1) letter must come from the student’s current school
  • Official high school transcript* · Official SAT/ACT scores (optional for 2021-22 application)
  • Student Resume(optional

*Documents with an asterisk beside it must be submitted directly from the high school and will not be accepted if submitted by the applicant.

 

Application Deadlines

Our application deadlines for new first-time applicants are as follows: 

Early Decision
Early Action
Regular Decision
November 1 (Decision Notification: December 31)
November 1 (Decision Notification: December 31)
February 1 (Decision Notification: April 1)

Supplemental Materials/Supporting Documents

In addition to the online application, the following documents are required for new first-time (first-year) applicants to complete an application for admission:

  • Guidance Counselor Letter of Recommendation*
  • Teacher Letter of Recommendation*
  • Official Copy of SAT or ACT Scores - May be on the official high school transcript or received by the College Board or ACT
  • Official High School Transcript*
  • Student Resume (optional)

*Documents with an asterisk beside it must be submitted directly from the high school and will not be accepted if submitted by the applicant. It is preferred that all supporting documents be submitted electronically to applicant@spelman.edu. You are also encouraged to register with Slate.org, which will allow you to upload documents directly into the student’s Spelman application file.

Honors Program

Students who qualify for the Honors Program with a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA and a combined 1300 SAT or 28 ACT will be invited to apply. Those who are invited will be required to submit an additional essay. The topic of the required essay will be provided in the invitation.

Average GPA: 3.83 (weighted)
Average SAT: 1203*(ERW+M)
Average ACT: 27* composite

*Averages reflect applicants who opted to have test scores reviewed. Spelman College has suspended standardized testing requirements for students applying for the class of 2026. This policy applies to all new first-time application cycles.
