Reporting Fellowship and Application Details

The Pulitzer Center raises awareness of underreported global issues through direct support for quality journalism. Each year, the Pulitzer Center announces a cohort of Reporting Fellows from among Campus Consortium partners such as Spelman College to cover public-interest journalism about countries across the globe.

Spelman is now accepting applications through Feb. 19, 2024, for a Spelman Reporting Fellowship at Pulitzer Center focused on issues related to one of the following: Gender Equality, Justice, and Climate Science.

• Gender Equality: Should elevate the voices of communities not often represented in the media, highlight resilience, and/or tackle systemic issues related to gender or women’s empowerment using data and investigative reporting.
• Justice: What constitutes criminal behavior and why? How do identity and circumstance play into the criminalization of individuals? What are the links between civil rights, human rights, education, and the environment? What protections are there for individuals seeking asylum or facing deportation?
• Climate Change: New scientific discoveries, changes in local atmospheric conditions, weather patterns, or their local biosphere; changes to your local coastlines, fisheries and marine life, parks and wilderness areas, water supplies or agricultural areas; health impacts related to climate change; and changes in the local environment caused by state or local environmental regulations; and sustainable solutions.

This opportunity is open to current Spelman students, and all majors are encouraged to submit a project with a global focus, or one related to the United States. Read about previous Spelman fellowship winners.

A winner will be awarded a $3,000 stipend and receive mentorship from the Pulitzer Center staff and grantees, network with professional reporters and editors, and participate in workshops to build journalism. Individuals may submit no more than one application and may propose projects on multiple platforms—articles, photo essays, video, audio, and data visualizations. The Spelman Reporting Fellowship application deadline is Feb. 19, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Application Process

1. Complete the Spelman Reporting Fellowship at Pulitzer Center Application.
2. Be sure that your list of three references is professional or academic and if possible, at least one from a Spelman faculty member who might have a direct interest to serve as project mentor.
3. Upload Resume and two samples of your work.
4. Expect to hear from a member of the Spelman's Gordon-Zeto Center for Global Education (not the Pulitzer Center) on your status and/or acceptance.
