Our Food Studies Program is global. We have funding to take our Food Scholars to various countries to examine Black foodways. Over Spring break 2023, our Food Scholars traveled 8 days/7 nights to Portugal to examine Black foodways in Lisbon and engage African diasporic communities to understand food practices and food as a marker of cultural identity and socially controversial issues.
The Program also takes regular trips to Sapelo Island to commune with the Hog Hammock Community. Trips have included opportunities to assist with oyster and sugar cane harvest and facilitate cultural exchange.

The Food Studies program positions food at the center of academic inquiry, calling attention to the multifaceted ways food, and discourses surrounding it, influence us as not only as biological beings, but social and cultural actors as well.
