A History of Study Languages

The World Languages and Cultures Department picture is a vibrant, visually striking representation of unity and diversity, depicting a central open book surrounded by colorful, abstract shapes and patterns that evoke the artistic traditions and design elements of various global cultures. The dynamic, overlapping elements create a sense of movement and interconnectedness, conveying how the study of world languages and cultures allows for the discovery of common threads and shared experiences that transcend borders, while also highlighting the rich tapestry of cultural diversity that the department celebrates.

Alma Augusta Oakes introduced the Spanish program at Spelman in 1941This portrait celebrates Oakes' vision and tireless efforts to elevate the study of foreign languages as a critical component of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Her work paved the way for generations of Spelman students to develop multilingual fluency and cross-cultural competencies, equipping them to engage meaningfully with diverse communities both at home and abroad. This portrait stands as a tribute to Oakes' lasting legacy as an educational innovator and staunch advocate for empowering Black women through the study of world languages and cultures

Ms. Alma Augusta Oakes was a graduate of Fisk University and of the University of Kansas where she graduated with an MA in 1937. She had also attended the Universities of California in Mexico While at the University of Mexico, Miss Oakes was elected ot membership in sigma Delta Pi, National Hispanic Society.
