Salvador da Bahia: The epicenter of Afro-Brazilian culture. Be immersed in a unique cultural experience of music, dance, food and history in a breathtaking landscape.
“Cultural Encounters in Brazil” is an exciting 4-week study abroad program open to students from all majors and classifications. Travel with us to the historic city of Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia in Northeast Brazil. This program will introduce you to modern Brazil in the context of its rich history, culture and contemporary issues, with an emphasis on the experiences of Afro-Brazilians. It is an excellent opportunity for students who seek a greater understanding of the African Diaspora.
Students will enroll in 2 classes: Brazilian Culture (with an emphasis on Afro-Brazilian issues) and Portuguese Language. There are no prerequisites for this program and students earn 6 academic credits. By the end of the program, students should be able to develop a personal definition of cultural engagement and demonstrate an understanding of the similarities and differences in social, economic, cultural, and political values between the U.S. and Brazil.
