“It’s really important for Spelman students to be exposed to other cultures. It’s part of being a global citizen to understand all cultures and join in the joy of celebrating people who don’t necessarily look like you. It was a big turnout for the Chinese club. I’m excited to see people getting out of their comfort zones and trying new things, such as making dumplings and learning calligraphy. It’s nice,” Nyla Rahman, the president of the Chinese Culture Club, said.
Students, faculty and staff were invited to participate in several activities. They engaged in a dumpling workshop where they learned how to make dumplings from scratch; experienced Chinese brush, calligraphy and painting instruction; enjoyed Chinese folk-dance performances; sang Chinese songs to embrace the culture through music; and cultural played games to win prizes and awards.
“It broadens students' mindsets and makes them aware of different cultures," Rahman, a senior international studies major from Washington, D.C., added. "They are more excited to learn about different people and new things, and they are less apprehensive about things they are unfamiliar with."
