At Spelman we offer a multitude of summer study abroad programs, directed by World Language Department staff in countries around the world. From the Caribbean to Japan, students can travel with their professors on a fully immersive trip to a country of their choice. Find more information about our programs below!
Back To Destinations Study abroad with the World Languages and Cultures Department in Ecuador. Students will have the opportunity to get 5-6 language credits, complete community service in Ecuador, and live in home with an Ecuadorian host family. Scholars are encouraged to apply below! Back To Destinations Travel to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil with the World Language and Cultures Department! Receive up to 6 credits and experience living with a host family, traveling to historic sites throughout Brazil, and take Portuguese classes. Applications are available in the World Language Department in Cosby. Letter of Recommendation required. Scholars are encouraged to apply below! Back To Destinations Explore the Dominican Republic with the World Language and Cultures Department. Study Spanish and receive up to 6 credits. During the trip, students will be living with living with local families, attending classes and Dominican institutions and engage in local community service. Scholars are encouraged to apply! Back To Destinations Join the World Languages and Cultures Department on a trip to Chiba, Japan (Near Tokyo) this summer. Students will have the opportunity to stay in fully furnished downtown apartments. Students also can receive up to 8 credits for attending. Japanese language experience is not need prior to applying. Back To Destinations While not related to the World Languages and Culture Department, Spelman does also other Study Abroad programs through CIEE, IES, Gordon-Zeto Center and more! These courses are listed below. Students may be eligible to receive credit for these courses as well.
The CECAT Abroad program is taking Spelman all the way to Oaxaca, Mexico! Just 300 miles from Mexico City Oaxaca was ranked the 1# city in the world by Travel + Leisure Magazine in 2022. CECAT Abroad features both a medical abroad program and a Spanish program where medical students can observe surgery, learn how to draw blood, taking vital signs, and more. Spanish students will take courses to complete the Spanish 202 requirement and enjoy local traditional Oaxacan activities like yarn making, biking around the city and even parties! All students will be living with a host family or with other program members in large groups at local trusted hotels. They will experience life as Oaxaqueños while traveling to waterfalls, creating bonds with Mexican University students and even ziplining! Contact Nadia Ramirez for more information.
