Wintermester courses are offered in three online types – synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid. Students may take the course anywhere. Visit the Wintermester webpage for the definition of each type.
Students may take 1 course (up to 4 credits) during Wintermester.
Wintermester is intensive. To succeed in a 3-credit course, students should expect to invest approximately 14 hours of synchronous or asynchronous scheduled instruction per week. To succeed in a 4-credit course, students should expect to invest approximately 18 hours of scheduled instruction per week. Please note that students may need to spend extra hours completing course readings or other course preparation work outside of scheduled instruction.

Wintermester online courses require strong computer competency, self-motivation, time management, and organizational skills. Students can take the Online Leaming Self-Assessment to determine if they have the skills and mindsets necessary to succeed in an online, accelerated course. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss course scheduling with their academic advisor prior to registration.
Registered students will receive a link via email to self-enroll in the SCOUP Student Orientation course. This self-paced online course provides engaging modules, practical tips, and interactive forums to help students succeed in online, accelerated learning. The course takes approximately 1 -1.5 hours to complete. It provides an online learning community before Wintermester starts.
No. A course needs to have at least 6 enrolled students to be able to run during Wintermester. A student must complete registration and payment processes to be considered enrolled.

No. Full payment is required before registration closes. It is recommended that you complete the payment in full earlier to secure your course spot.
No. The HOPE Scholarship and other scholarships are not available for Wintermester.

No. Spelman does not provide cross-registration during Wintermester. The student would have to contact another AUC institution and apply as a transient student there.
Spelman Wintermester courses are open to non-Spelman students. Non-Spelman students who want to take a Spelman Wintermester course need to complete the Wintermester Transient Application to apply.
Yes. Students need to fill out the Off-Campus Course Approval Form and get the form approved by the department chair. After the course with another institution is completed, if the student wants to request the course credits to transfer to Spelman, the student needs to request a transcript from the institution that offers the course and submit the transcript to Spelman Registrar's Office.
Students at Spelman College and at AUC schools can take one course during Wintermester.
Yes, Spelman College adjunct professors are encouraged to participate.
The decision to run electives or only core required courses during Wintermester is up to the department chair and faculty.
No. Teaching during Wintermester is optional. Faculty are not required to develop or teach a course.
