History - Global Opportunities

The history department encourages and facilitates exchange-student opportunities internationally and domestically.

“We encourage students to study abroad. If you are studying history, wherever you may be, we think you should have some international experience integrated with your major study," Phillips-Lewis said. “We have programs that allow study abroad with on-track graduation.”

Spelman history majors also participate in domestic-exchange programs and internships for one or two semesters during the regular term as well as during summers.

“History is the mother of all disciplines,” Phillips-Lewis said. “You have to know where you have been to know where you are in the present, and where you can go in the future."

Those who plan to participate in either study abroad or domestic exchange opportunities should observe the following:

  1. For all courses taken outside of Spelman, prior departmental approval is required for more than one course to count toward fulfilling the area of concentration requirement.
  2. Both Historical Methods and the Senior Seminar must be completed at Spelman.
  3. No more than two history courses taken on one semester study abroad and three for one year can be counted toward requirements for the major. In any event, no more than three history courses taken outside of Spelman College can be counted for major credit.
