Promoting Community Accountability


The Title IX and Compliance Office adheres to the federal Title IX civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or educational program that receives federal funding. Spelman’s Title IX and Compliance Office is focused on preventive education, effective response, and intentional assessment around sex discrimination, including domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Additionally, the Title IX and Compliance Office assists the Enterprise Risk Management Committee to review institutional compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

  • To request a training or a program, please complete a program by request form. Please note, program requests should be made 10 business days prior to the suggested date and time of the requested program.
  • Schedule an appointment to get information about the reporting process or seek protective measures or resources.

Title IX & Compliance Team

The Title IX Team oversees all complaints of sex discrimination and identifying and addressing any patterns or systemic problems that arise during the review of such complaints.

Report an Incident

Sex discrimination and/or violence by members of the College community should be immediately reported to Spelman College’s Title IX Coordinator or a Deputy Title IX Coordinator.

Spelman College offers several support and resource options for individuals who have experienced, witnessed, or been accused of sex discrimination, including acts of sexual violence. We offer on campus support and resources available to members of the Spelman community.

Dedicated to delivering the Spelman Promise, the Title IX & Compliance Office supports this commitment through compliance efforts, promoting community accountability, responding to incidents, education and encouraging student leadership. 

What is Title IX?

What is Title IX?

Title IX requires an educational institution to respond to sex discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual violence, intimate partner violence and stalking that is sufficiently serious to deny or limit a student’s or employee’s ability to participate in or benefit from the school’s education programs and activities. 

When a school knows of possible sex discrimination, it must take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate or otherwise determine what occurred. If an investigation reveals that the discrimination created a hostile environment, the school must take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the harassment, eliminate the hostile environment, prevent its recurrence, and, as appropriate, remedy its effects.   

Sex discrimination can take multiple forms, involving a range of issues, such sexual harassment, sexual violence, and unequal access to educational resources.  For more information about sexual harassment, please review the Sexual Misconduct Policy.
