Pioneering Change: The Founders of Spelman Sports & Entertainment Collective

A Meeting of Minds: The Beginning of SSEC

At the start of the semester in their “Survey of Research Methods” class, Destiny Blash, C’2025, and Camryn Mitchell, C’2026, found themselves conversing. It was the first week of class and as students were going around the room and sharing their career goals, Blash spoke about her interest in sports and entertainment law. At the same time, Mitchell eagerly expressed her desire to become a sports agent and interest in sports law.

That moment of connection laid the foundation for what would become the Spelman Sports and Entertainment Collective (SSEC) — a dedicated space for Black women to cultivate their interest in entering these competitive industries.I think a lot of students got excited because they were interested in entering the sports and entertainment industry, but didn’t know where to start,” Blash explained. “There weren’t many resources or spaces readily available, and we wanted to change that.”

From its inception, SSEC gained momentum, launching various impactful programs. The organization's first event How to Enter the Biz featured industry professionals, specifically  Spelman alumnae working at major agencies like UTA and CAA, sports agents, and entertainment attorneys ( Ashli Jones, Esq., Bria Townsend, Dasia Thompson, Monet Simon, Nya Morgan, Parker Joseph, and Sydney Tucker, Esq.). Other standout programs followed, including collaborations with WME, UTA, Spelman Film Fusion, Spelman Women in HipHop, The Spelman Office of Alumnae Engagement, Xposure, Grammys, and more, all designed to offer students practical insights into the industry and opportunities to network and build relationships within their desired careers.

Expanding Opportunities: The Push for Institutional Support

While SSEC has already made a significant impact in its inaugural year, its founders have ambitious, long-term goals. A key priority is increasing institutional awareness of the academic need for a sports and entertainment business curriculum. Expanding this awareness could pave the way for meaningful discussions about establishing a minor or concentration in this field.

“There’s no reason why Spelman, located in Atlanta—a major hub for these industries—shouldn’t have a dedicated program to support students interested in this space,” Blash emphasized.

“We have professors and alumnae with deep industry connections and experience who are eager to support and guide students, and it’s time to make the most of those opportunities.”

Beyond curriculum development, the goal is to create a clearer pathway for future Spelmanites to enter and thrive in these industries.

Leaving a Legacy: Uplifting the Next Generation

When asked about the legacy they want to leave at Spelman, Blash, and Mitchell both emphasized their desire to be remembered as changemakers who uplifted others. “I want to be remembered as someone who truly embodied the spirit of sisterhood,” Blash said.

“Someone who uplifted, nurtured, and created spaces where we could support one another and thrive together. Mitchell echoed her sentiment, adding, “I want to be remembered as a change-maker with a good soul—someone who not only created something impactful but was also someone people could come to.

As they prepare for life after graduation, Blash and Mitchell remain dedicated to continuing their work in sports and entertainment. Blash is currently working at Carter + Woodard, a Black-owned sports and entertainment law firm, and plans to take a gap year before heading to law school next fall. Mitchell is looking forward to her senior year as she continues to pursue her career aspirations of becoming a sports agent and attending law school after graduation. With their passion and determination, there’s no doubt that these two trailblazers will continue to open doors for future generations.

Through SSEC, they have laid the foundation for a thriving community of Black women pursuing careers in sports and entertainment -- ensuring that those who follow in their footsteps will have the support, resources, and connections they need to thrive and be successful.
