Zoie RichelieuZoie Richelieu, C’2025, an international studies major with a concentration in Asia from Washington, D.C., had a transformative experience as part of the HBCU delegation to Taipei, Taiwan, last spring. The program, focused on governmental affairs and U.S.-Taiwan relations, significantly broadened her understanding of cultural diplomacy and global politics.

“This opportunity in Taiwan has piqued my interest in public diplomacy and East Asian politics in relation to the United States. I aim to deepen my understanding of international development and the impactful work of non-governmental organizations,” said Richelieu. “By engaging with diverse perspectives and experiences, I hope to pursue a future as a public diplomacy foreign service officer, where I can contribute to building bridges across cultures.”

During her time in Taiwan, Richelieu discovered a deep passion for people-to-people engagement in international affairs. This journey not only enhanced her knowledge of East Asian politics but also highlighted the crucial role of personal connections in fostering diplomatic relationships. For her future career in international relations, Zoie realized that these nuances are essential to promoting cross-cultural dialogue. She was particularly struck by the depth of cultural diplomacy and the intricacies of U.S.–Taiwan relations.

Engaging directly with Taiwanese officials and participating in discussions about governmental affairs provided her with a nuanced understanding of East Asian politics. This hands-on experience in Taipei not only broadened her academic knowledge but also ignited a passion for international engagement and diplomacy. Initially, she viewed Taiwan primarily through the lens of her academic studies in international relations. However, the experience allowed her to see Taiwan’s vibrant culture, dynamic political landscape and the warmth of its people firsthand.
