Domestic Exchange Student Reflections

Spelman College

spelman-campus-student-oval.jpgAt first, I was a little overwhelmed by how many Black people there were around as a student who had attended a PWI for two years. Over time, it wasn’t hard for me to adjust. The students and faculty at Spelman (and in the AUC) are very welcoming.

My classes have been going well and I love that most are rooted in Black (women's) history as opposed to the white (man's) history that I am used to learning. To critique the Exchange Program, after orientation it felt like we were just let on our own which could be very difficult for a person that isn’t sociable or used to being around close friends/ family. However, the other exchange girls and I exchanged numbers the day of orientation and we make it a point to meet up often. Nevertheless, I wish there was a system in which each of us got paired with a Spelman student who would continue to show us the ropes. It would also be nice if there were mandatory events for us exchange students to ensure that we maintain a bond.
