Domestic Exchange Student Reflections
Babson College
During the past two months, I finally learned the importance of true growth. I have realized that it is when I am outside of my comfort zone that I flourish the most. Transitioning from Spelman College, a historically black College, to Babson College, a predominately white college, was the best thing for me within this season of my life. The Babson culture is unique and tailored for future entrepreneurs. I truly believe that Babson College was the perfect fit for me because while on this journey, I am learning the importance of identity/values, how to grow my spiritual walk, and even strategies for going beyond what I’m accustomed to yet still be successful.
I am connected with the international students in order to broaden my understanding of various cultures. I have had the opportunity to taste various foods from countries like Sweden and Uganda and I actually enjoyed it. Being able to be a chameleon in any environment while staying true to my identity has been rewarding. My mind has been expanded and as I prepare to go to Argentina next semester, I believe that this is setting me up for what I will experience abroad.
Academically, I take four classes and I have been challenged because I have never taken a business class. One thing I appreciate from all of my professors, is the willingness to help no matter what it takes. I have had professors offer phone conferences and other ways to communicate outside of office hours to ensure that I understand the material. My favorite course is "Organizational Behavior" because it has taught me how to develop my critical thinking skills regarding the complex circumstances that surround why people behave as they do in organizations.
Spiritually, I have grown tremendously and what God is doing in my life amazes me. It is odd because being away from my comfort zone has taught me more in such a small amount of time than when I was in my normal environment.
As far as extra-curricular activities, I auditioned and made the Babson Dance Ensemble Team, and I will dance in our end-of-the-semester concert. I am also a member of the Black Student Union where I am able to collaborate with fellow African Americans on various projects. I am excited about what phase two of this journey will bring.
