In Memoriam: A Faithful Servant Leader

President Jimmy CarterThe Spelman College community joins the nation and the world in mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a visionary leader and son of Georgia whose legacy of service, compassion, and humanity will inspire generations to come.

President Carter dedicated his life to uplifting others, from constructing homes with Habitat for Humanity to championing global health, peace, and environmental sustainability.

His unwavering commitment to equity and justice extended to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), whose futures he helped to secure through Executive Order 12232 in 1980. This transformative action established a federal program to expand and strengthen HBCUs, ensuring our institutions received the resources and recognition necessary to thrive.

Spelman College Honors Jimmy CarterIn 1994, President Carter visited  Spelman and engaged students, faculty and staff in a dialogue that reflected his characteristic humility and belief in the power of education to transform lives. During his plenary address on “Governance, Equity and the Global Poor: A Curriculum Development Institute” on the evening of his departure to North Korea, he discussed global issues and developments that affect the environment. He also expressed a desire to see Spelman students enthusiastic and prepared to make changes in the world. He noted that "the goal in life for all society is justice.”

He reminded us, "We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles," a sentiment that resonates deeply with Spelman’s mission to empower women leaders of change.

President Carter often said, “The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices.” His life was a testament to that truth, and his work continues to inspire us to build bridges, not barriers.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family and the Carter Center team during this time of reflection and remembrance. May his boundless spirit and tireless dedication to humanity continue to guide us in the pursuit of justice and compassion.

Rest in peace, President Carter. You have left an indelible mark on history, on Georgia, and on our hearts.
