Spelman College’s Department of Economics has been selected as a 2024 recipient of the American Economic Association’s (AEA) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diversity and Inclusion. The College will accept a certificate honoring the achievement on January 3, at the 2025 Allied Social Science (ASSA) Annual Meeting.
To be considered for the award, recipients must take productive steps to establish programs and procedures, create an inclusive environment and increase participation of underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities, women and LGBTQ+ individuals in their economics communities.
As an AEA Award recipient, the College is being recognized for developing innovative initiatives that address the intersection of race and economics. According to the AEA, the College has demonstrated its leadership in advancing diversity within the profession through programs like the Lisa D. Cook Scholarship, the Women in STEM Summer Bridge Accelerator and partnerships with national organizations.
The AEA is a non-profit, non-partisan, scholarly association dedicated to the discussion and publication of economics research, and the economics field’s primary scholarly organization. With over 17,000 members, the award is given to departments and organizations that demonstrate outstanding achievement in diversity and inclusion practices.
Dr. Marionette Holmes, associate professor of economics and chair of the department at Spelman, and two additional faculty members will accept the certificate during the AEA Excellence Awards Ceremony on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 4:45 p.m. The Excellence Awards Ceremony will be livestreamed for open viewing here.
