Spelman College Student Receives the Inaugural Secoriea Turner Social Justice Scholarship

Spelman College student Blair Moore, C’2027, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Secoriea Turner Social Justice Scholarship, named in honor of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner who was shot and killed during protests in 2020.

"This scholarship ensures that Secoriea’s legacy lives on, inspiring young leaders like Blair Moore to fight for social justice and equity," said Secoriea’s mother Charmaine Turner, according to 11Alive. "Our family is overwhelmed with gratitude for the support of Spelman College and the organizations that made this possible."

Turner’s parents, their lawyers and the Black Woman’s Lab and Black Man’s Lab raised thousands to fund the scholarship to help support a college student with a passion for social justice and equity.

Blair MooreMoore, an English major and dance choreography minor from San Francisco, Cali., is civically engaged as a member of Spelman’s Social Justice Fellows Program and Spelman’s NAACP Social Committee. She prides herself on being active in her community through volunteer service.

“Blair Moore, the inaugural Secoriea Turner Scholar sees herself as a Black girl seeking justice for all Black girls - young and old,” said Dr. Cynthia Spence, associate professor of sociology and founding director of the Spelman College Social Justice Fellows Program. “It will be through her continued intellectual growth and development that we will witness the promise of so many Black girls. The Social Justice Program is honored to preserve the legacy of Secoriea Turner.”

According to Moore, this $10,000 award will provide the support and resources she needs to complete her undergraduate degree and amplify her efforts in social justice advocacy. Upon graduating from Spelman, Moore plans to pursue her master’s in business administration and start a business with a social justice advocacy lens. Her goal is to create change and bring peace and joy to the lives of others.

“I came to Spelman knowing that this was the beginning of my journey to changing the world,” said Moore. “I am so blessed to be commemorating Secoriea Turner through this scholarship. This scholarship is far more than an award—it is a call to action to uplift and remember Secoriea’s name and life.”
