This fall, Spelman College welcomed 700 new students to campus, including first-time and transfer students.
Interest in Spelman has continued to increase in recent years. The College received more than 12,000 applications for Fall 2024, making it one of the most competitive applicant pools in the College’s history. Spelman’s current acceptance rate is 25%, a notable drop from 51% in 2021.
“Spelman’s unique position as a premier HBCU, liberal arts college and women’s college continues to attract the best and brightest students from across the globe,” said Chelsea Holley, director of Admissions. “The Class of 2028 is intellectually curious, civically engaged and committed to changing the world. We are so excited to welcome them to the Spelman community.”
The incoming class includes students from 37 states and U.S. territories, three countries and 27 counties in Georgia. This year, the top five states represented are Georgia, Maryland, New York, Illinois and Texas.
Fulton County was the most common county of residence among Georgia residents, with Gwinnett, Cobb, Dekalb and Rockdale close behind. The average GPA of incoming students is 3.9, with an average SAT score of 1202 among the 34% of students who submitted their scores.
Top majors for the incoming class include biology, political science, health science, and psychology.
"It is my pleasure to welcome the Class of 2028 to the Spelman family,” Spelman College President Helene D. Gayle said in a welcome message. “I am confident that they will dive into their academic pursuits with vigor, engage passionately in campus life and make lifelong connections with their fellow sisters.”
