Alumna Appointed to Illinois Human Rights Commission

Spelman Alumna LeDeidre TurnerLeDeidre Turner, C'2008, was recently appointed commissioner of the Illinois Human Rights Commission by Illinois Governor Jay Robert “J.B.”Pritzker.
 
The appointment, pending confirmation by the Illinois Senate, was announced on June 21, 2019. Currently, Turner serves as an assistant commissioner of prosecution and adjudication in the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. In this role, she provides guidance, direction, and training to attorneys and law clerks in the division. She co-manages labor relations for the department and assists all divisions with labor-management issues. 

Prior to joining the city, Turner was an assistant state's attorney with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, working in the Child Support Enforcement Division, Child Protection Division, Delinquency Division and Felony Review Unit.

Turner currently serves as the financial secretary for the Cook County Bar Association as well as the chairperson of its annual Minority Law Student Job Fair, the largest job fair of its kind in the Midwest. She is also a board member for Legal Aid Chicago, formerly LAF, as well as a member of the 2017-2018 cohort for the IMPACT leadership development program through the Chicago Urban League. Turner received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Spelman and a Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School.
