Spelman Alumna Retires After 20 Years of Civic Service

March 2019

Major Rebecca BrownMajor Rebecca Brown, C’2000, retired from the Clayton County Police Department in January 2019. The Clayton County Police Department was established in 1928, and more than 75 years later Brown became the county’s first African American female lieutenant in 2007. This was not the first time Brown had broken a glass ceiling in her career, in fact, her list of accomplishments are full of “firsts.”

Brown served in the police force for more than 20 years and was the first African American female patrolman from 1990 - 1995. She went on to become Clayton County's first African American female major.

She eventually brought her talents to Spelman, where she graduated in 2000 as a Pauline E. Drake scholar.
