Alumna Credits Broadway Success to Lessons She Learned While at Spelman

January 2019

toccarra cashShe may have just wrapped up her first run on Broadway, but Toccarra Cash, C’2005, relies on the same pre-show rituals she established prior to her many Spelman performances – vocal warm ups, dancing and prayer.

In September, Cash made her Broadway debut playing Annie, a fumbling stage manager whose production goes haywire, in the acclaimed comedy, “The Play That Goes Wrong.” The characters resolve, she said, is what drew her to Annie and the show. That resolve reminds her of Spelman.

“Spelman, without a shadow of doubt, laid the foundation for my success. The deep sense of self-worth sown into me there continues to inform my steps in the world, especially when self-doubt starts to creep in," she said. "My advice to current students is: soak in every single moment of the special place you're in now. Spelman is like no place else in the world.”
