HCOPPP Scholars Host Health Health Fair at Spelman

November 2018

health fair 2018The Health Career Opportunities Pipeline Preparation Program (HCOPPP) Scholars and Health Science majors at Spelman recently hosted their annual campus health fair in honor of the late Adrienne Bauduit, C'2012. During her junior year, Bauduit, a HCOPPP Scholar, died from complications due to diabetes.

The fair provides an opportunity for students and health-based organizations to share information with the Spelman College Community. The goal of the fair is to enhance the awareness of students, faculty, and staff about chronic conditions that disproportionately impact undeserved populations and minority groups.

The fair affords students in the College's "Introduction to Health Science" course an opportunity to present their Health Promotion Project -- an assignment where they must educate their peers about initiatives outlined in Healthy People 2020, an initiative that provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.

health fair 2018Spelman students tackled topics such as breast cancer, sickle cell disease, prostate cancer, herpes simplex virus infection, cardiovascular disease, infant mortality/pre-natal care, and HIV infection. Other companies and organizations present at the fair included Kiwi Fresh, the Sickle Cell Foundation, Sister Love, LLC, the Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Spelman College Wellness Center.

Additionally, the Health Careers Program in partnership with the American Red Cross, conducted a blood drive earlier in the week to support the shortage of supplies that exist for blood types commonly associated with ethnic/racial minorities. This semester, Spelman was expected to donate 30 pints of blood, and that goal was exceeded.
