Students Showcase Talents and Inspirations Through Allstate Poetry Competition

November 2018

Allstate Pillars & PoetryThree Spelman students placed in the top five of an Atlanta University Center poetry competition sponsored by Allstate Insurance. Allstate’s Pillars & Poetry Tour showcased the values of historically Black colleges and universities and their place in our community through spoken word.

Justice Victoria Frederick, C’2021, and Kynnedi Spratt, C’2021, placed second and third overall in the final competition. Frederick recited a piece about the games people play while dating.

Spratt focused on the power of Black motherhood, celebrating her own mother. Rayven Peterson, C’2021, was a semi-finalist and paid homage to her mother. “Being praised for my work meant a lot to me,” said Frederick. “This was my first performance to a crowd since coming to Spelman. Now I plan to write and perform as much as I can before I graduate.”
