Since its inception, Spelman College has transformed from a one-room seminary to a pioneering undergraduate liberal arts institution. 143 years later, the vision of Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. On April 11, 1881, Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles established Spelman College, an institution dedicated to empowering women of African descent with exceptional education. With a pledge of $100, they laid the foundation for a pioneering liberal arts institution that continues to equip and elevate brilliant young Black women, enabling them to become global changemakers.
