He’s devoted four decades toward helping Atlanta University Center institutions build upon their missions, including Spelman and Morehouse Colleges and Atlanta University. In 1971, he joined the Spelman College Board of Trustees, then served as chair of the AU Board of Trustees during the 1980s and also held a short stint as a Morehouse College Trustee.
At Spelman, Smith worked with seven board chairs and five presidents during his tenure. Many note his fundraising and leadership of the investment committee among his many great accomplishments. “He leaves a legacy of incredible success,” said board chair Yvonne Jackson. “Incredible in terms of all the things he has done for both the board and of course, Spelman College—in particular our endowment. “
Smith has made significant gifts in support of the endowment, as well as other initiatives. The New York resident has been generous to students both philanthropically and professionally, serving as a mentor to many alumnae pursuing careers in the investment, banking or finance industries. The Jonathan Smith/Robert Flanigan Endowed Scholarship is just one honor in recognition of his caring commitment to Spelmanites, a fund made possible through the generous donation of Trustee Ted Aronson and his family.
