President Appointees Have Spelman Connection
On Friday, Feb. 26, President Barack Obama signed a new Executive Order re-establishing the White House Initiative on historically Black colleges and universities and the President's Board of Advisors on HBCUs. President Beverly Daniel Tatum was reappointed to the board, and board trustee Evelyn Hammonds, Ph.D., C'76, will serve as a new appointee.
First signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1981 to "overcome the effects of discriminatory treatment" and expand capacity at HBCUs, the Executive Order will make more money and support available to the institutions, beginning with the 2011 budget. HBCUs will now receive $98 million in federal money, and nearly $400 million will be available to HBCU students who qualify for Pell grants. The Board of Advisors will advise the President and Secretary of Education on methods, programs, and strategies to strengthen HBCUs.
